Acupuncture and Bell’s Palsy

If you’re suffering from Bell’s Palsy, take it from me, acupuncture can help! Bell’s Palsy is a form of peripheral facial paralysis that results from damage to the seventh cranial nerve, or “facial nerve”. This nerve disorder afflicts approximately 40,000 Americans each year, it can strike almost anyone at any age, and has no known cause. Due to paralysis of the facial nerve, symptoms can include an inability to lift or close one eye, difficulty moving facial muscles on one side of the face, pain, distortion of taste, and tingling around the lip area on the affected side. People who tend to be most at risk are pregnant women, diabetics, and people afflicted with the flu virus, cold, or some form of respiratory illness. In Chinese medicine, Bell’s Palsy is known as Wind Attack.  Wind is thought to enter the body, attacking the sinews and vessels in the area of the face. This results in Qi and blood stagnation, causing the inability of the flesh to relax or contract. Acupuncture works to expel Wind and promote the movement of Qi and blood by scattering stasis.

In most cases the patient has a deficient immune system due to physical and/ or emotional stress that prevents them from combating the illness. Since acupuncture helps to improve blood circulation and energy flow to the affected site to restore function, as well as having immune enhancing effects, acupuncture can be a safe and effective addition to the treatment of Bell’s Palsy. Studies have indicated that Bell’s Palsy cases respond much better to acupuncture combined with herbal therapy, which is why I recommend taking herbal medicine and whole food nutritional supplementsin addition to acupuncture. Chinese herbs have three basic functions: to kill harmful bacteria or viruses, strengthen the body, and promote a balanced system that leads to overall health. Although the rate at which a patient recovers from Bell’s Palsy varies from weeks to months depending on the severity of the case, the powerful combination of acupuncture, whole food nutritional supplements, and herbal medicine can speed up the process. As a licensed acupuncturist with experience with Bell’s Palsy, I’m here to tell you that there IS hope!
